WTC Final: Ishan Kishan Named as the Injury Replacement of KL Rahul

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has announced Ishan Kishan as the injury replacement of KL Rahul, for the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, which will be played between 7-11 June. Rahul, who sustained a thigh injury in the ongoing IPL 2023, will be undergoing surgery, subsequently cutting his IPL campaign short and ruling him out of the flight to England.

To replace him, 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been roped into the side. Interestingly, Kishan is yet to make his Test debut, albeit he has made 41 appearances for India – 27 in T20Is and 14 in ODIs.

KL Rahul injured himself while fielding during the ongoing IPL 2023 in a game between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The wicketkeeper-batter then made the official announcement of the extent of his injury and said that he won’t be participating in the remainder of the IPL 2023, and will also be out of the World Test Championship Final that is set to be played next month.

The BCCI has now announced Ishan Kishan as KL Rahul’s replacement in the Indian squad for the marquee tournament which will be played against Australia on June 7 at The Oval.

While bowling in the nets, Jaydev Unadkat tripped over the side rope and hurt his left shoulder. The left-arm fast bowler is now undergoing rehab session at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and his progress will be closely looked after. He is still a part of the squad, and a call upon his final inclusion will be taken later as the tournament approaches.

On April 26, during the IPL 2023 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Umesh Yadav suffered a light left hamstring injury. The fast bowler has begun low-intensity bowling as part of his rehabilitation process while being looked after by the KKR Medical Team at the moment. Umesh Yadav’s progress is being monitored on regular basis as the BCCI’s medical team is in constant touch with KKR’s medical team.

At the ongoing 16th edition of the IPL, Karun Nair replaced KL Rahul in Lucknow’s squad.

India’s updated squad for WTC final: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Ishan Kishan (wk).
