Pakistan and Oman Withdraw from Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025
In a surprising development, Pakistan and Oman have withdrawn from the upcoming Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025, which is set to begin on 29 August. Their withdrawal has opened the door for Bangladesh and Kazakhstan, who will now get a chance to compete in this major tournament.
The Asia Cup is one of the biggest hockey events in the continent, bringing together the top Asian teams. This year’s tournament was expected to be highly competitive, but the exit of two teams has changed the picture.
Why did Pakistan and Oman withdraw?
According to reports, financial difficulties and internal management issues are the main reasons behind Pakistan’s withdrawal. Pakistan hockey has been struggling for some years due to lack of proper funding and administrative conflicts. The team, once a hockey giant with multiple World Cup and Olympic titles, is now finding it difficult even to participate in big tournaments.
Oman, on the other hand, has pulled out because of logistical and preparation challenges. Sources say that the team was not fully ready for the competition and decided to step back.
What does this mean for the tournament?
With Pakistan and Oman out, the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) invited Bangladesh and Kazakhstan to join the tournament. Both teams now have a golden opportunity to showcase their talent at the international level.
The Asia Cup will still go ahead as planned from 29 August, and teams like India, Malaysia, Korea, and Japan are expected to be the main contenders for the title.
This situation once again highlights the need for stronger support and management in Asian hockey, especially for countries like Pakistan, which has a rich history in the sport but is facing serious challenges today.
