Reason Behind Pujara’s Retirement ?

Cheteshwar Pujara Announces Retirement from All Formats

Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara, one of the most reliable Test batsmen of India, has announced his retirement from all formats of the game. He made this decision public on 24th August 2025, bringing an end to a remarkable journey that started nearly two decades ago.

Pujara began his domestic cricket career with Saurashtra in 2005, and made his international debut for India in 2010 against Australia. Known as “The Wall 2.0” of Indian cricket, he became the backbone of India’s Test team after Rahul Dravid. With his calm nature and solid defense, he helped India win several historic Test matches, including the 2018-19 Test series win in Australia.

In his statement, Pujara said that the main reason for retirement was to give younger players a chance. He also discussed the decision with his family and felt this was the right moment to step aside. Although fans expected a farewell match, Pujara did not get one, continuing the trend of many Indian legends who retired without a final game.

Pujara played 103 Test matches, scoring more than 7,000 runs, including 19 centuries. While he did not succeed much in limited overs formats, his contribution to Test cricket is unforgettable.

After retirement, Pujara has revealed that he will focus on coaching, mentoring young cricketers, and may also take part in commentary. He has also shown interest in helping Saurashtra cricket grow stronger.

Pujara’s retirement marks the end of an era for India’s classical Test batting. Fans and experts agree that India will always remember him as one of the greatest Test specialists of modern cricket.
