Sumit Nagal Denied Chinese Visa Ahead of Chengdu Tournament

Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal faced a major setback after his Chinese visa was rejected, preventing him from traveling to Chengdu for the Australian Open Playoff Tournament. The 27-year-old, who has been one of India’s top-ranked tennis players in recent years, was scheduled to participate in the playoff event, which offers qualification points and preparation opportunities ahead of the 2025 Australian Open.

According to reports, Nagal’s visa application to China was unexpectedly denied without a clear reason. The rejection came just days before his scheduled flight, leaving him with no time to make alternate arrangements. Nagal immediately sought assistance from the Indian Embassy in Beijing and the All India Tennis Association (AITA) to resolve the issue and ensure participation in the international event.

Expressing his disappointment on social media, Nagal said that he was shocked and disheartened by the situation, as he had submitted all required documents and had previously traveled to several countries for tournaments without any issue. The player emphasized how such situations hurt athletes’ preparation and ranking, especially when the tennis season’s early events are crucial for qualification.

The AITA has reached out to the Chinese Tennis Federation and the Ministry of External Affairs to help clear the situation. Meanwhile, fellow Indian players and fans have voiced support for Nagal, calling the decision “unfair and politically motivated.” The Chengdu tournament organizers have also been informed about the situation and are reportedly trying to coordinate with local authorities for a resolution.

This visa denial has also raised concerns among other Indian athletes who are scheduled to participate in upcoming sporting events in China. It has once again brought to light the diplomatic tensions that sometimes spill over into sports, affecting players’ careers and international tournaments.

As of now, Sumit Nagal is waiting for an official response from the embassy and tournament organizers. If the issue is not resolved soon, he may have to miss the Chengdu event, potentially losing valuable ranking points and preparation time before the Australian Open 2025 season.
