Shubman Gill’s 100* and Shami’s 5 wickets haul led India to victory. After Bangladesh, is it Pakistan’s turn now?

India vs Bangladesh, Champions Trophy 2025 Highlights: Shubman Gill finished unbeaten on 101 off 129 balls as he curbed his natural instincts, dug in and played through India’s chase in their opening match of the 2025 Champions Trophy against Bangladesh in Dubai. Gill finished unbeaten on 101 off 129 balls while KL Rahul hit the winning runs with a handsome six and was 41 not out off 47 balls. The stand between Gill and Rahul finishes unbeaten on 87 off 98 balls.

This was Gill’s second consecutive century in ODI cricket. He has now recorded scores of 87, 60, 112 and 101 not out. India had to work hard despite having to chase just 229 with the pitch in Dubai proving to be a sluggish one. Gill anchored the chase and while wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end, he finally found a steady partner in Rahul.

Rohit Sharma got India off to a quick start, as he usually does, with his side chasing a target of 229 against Bangladesh in their tournament opener in Dubai. Rohit put up a 69-run opening stand with Shubman Gill before falling to Taskin Ahmed for 41 off 36 balls in the 10th over. He went past 11,000 ODI runs in that innings and has now been replaced by Virat Kohli, who came into the match 37 away from 14,000 runs in the format.

Mohammed Shami starts 2025 Champions Trophy with a fifer

Mohammed Shami has started his tournament on a high, picking five wickets in the Champions Trophy tournament opener. Meanwhile Towhid Hridoy fought cramps to score 100 off 118 balls. His century and his record stand with Jaker Ali helped Banlgadesh recover from 35/5 in the ninth over to being all out for 228 in the last.

Jaker-Hridoy’s record recovery

Jaker and Hridoy put up a record 154-run stand for the sixth wicket to potentially save Bangladesh the blushes after their top five collapsed in the first nine overs. It ended with Jaker falling to Mohammed Shami in in 43rd over on 68 off 114 balls. Shami has thus become the second fastest to 200 ODI wickets.

Jaker and Hridoy put on a display of some old-school middle-over ODI batting to steady the ship for Bangladesh after India picked up five wickets in the first nine overs. Bangladesh have also been helped by easy catches being dropped off both batters. Jaker was dropped off his first ball by Rohit Sharma at slips, the easiest of catches that would’ve actually completed a hat-trick for Axar Patel. Then Hardik Pandya dropped Hridoy in the 20th over and two overs later, KL Rahul missed a stumping chance.

Disastrous first nine overs for Bangladesh

Bangladesh were shredded to pieces in the first 10 overs of the match after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss in Dubai and opted to bat first against India in their first match of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Mohammed Shami struck twice and Harshit Rana got one wicket while Axar Patel missed out on a hat-trick as Bangladesh lost as many as five wickets in the first nine overs. Rohit Sharma stated at the toss that he would have bowled first anyway, and announced that Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja come back into the team.
