Two Japanese Boxers Die After Brain Injuries in Same Event

In a heartbreaking incident, two young Japanese boxers lost their lives after suffering serious brain injuries during fights held on the same day in Tokyo. Both fighters were just 28 years old.

The tragic event happened on August 2, 2025, at Korakuen Hall, a famous boxing venue in Tokyo. In the first case, Shigetoshi Kotari fought in a 12-round match for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation junior lightweight title. After the fight ended in a draw, Kotari suddenly collapsed. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors found a severe brain bleed. He underwent emergency surgery, but sadly, he passed away on August 8.

In the second case, Hiromasa Urakawa fought against Yoji Saito and lost by technical knockout. Soon after the match, he showed signs of brain injury. He was rushed to the hospital and had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Despite all medical efforts, Urakawa died on August 9, just one day after Kotari’s death.

The news has shocked the Japanese boxing community and the sports world. Many fighters, fans, and officials have expressed deep sadness and sent condolences to the families of the two boxers.

After this double tragedy, the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation decided to reduce the length of all title fights from 12 rounds to 10 rounds. This step has been taken in the hope of making fights safer for athletes. The Japan Boxing Commission has also called an emergency meeting to review safety rules, including better medical checks and measures to prevent extreme weight cutting.

These events have raised important questions about the risks in boxing and the need for stronger safety
