Bowlers battered, records shattered in epic Centurion run-fest

Having produced a thrill-a-minute contest in a rain-curtailed first T20I in Centurion on Saturday, South Africa and West Indies bettered that less than 24 hours later at the same venue, producing a run-fest for the ages.

As it panned out, the hosts, fuelled by Quinton de Kock’s stunning hundred and Reeza Hendricks power-packed 68, gunned down the 259-run target with seven balls to spare to round off the highest successful run-chase in the format, as well as the highest match aggregate in all Men’s T20 cricket.

South Africa now hold the record for the highest successful run-chase in both ODIs and T20Is, having achieved the landmark 438/9 feat (target: 435) against Australia in Johannesburg back in 2006.

Stats highlights from the game

517 As many as 517 runs were scored across the two innings combined in the game, making it the highest scoring game in men’s T20 history, surpassing the 515 accumulated collectively by the Quetta Gladiators and Multan Sultans in Rawalpindi during the recently concluded Pakistan Super League 2023. The previous record in T20Is stood at 489, produced by India and the West Indies in Lauderhill in 2016.
