India’s misfortune in the 2024 Paris Olympics continued on Monday (August 5) as wrestler Nisha Dahiya suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the quarterfinals of the women’s 68kg freestyle competition to Pak Sol Gum of North Korea.
After a come-from-behind win in the Round of 16, Dahiya looked set to reach the semi-finals as she was leading the tie 8-1. A victory would have put her one win away from a medal, but fate had other plans for her. In the second half, she called for medical attention after suffering what looked like a hand injury. As doctors were called, a long medical break was needed as Dahiya’s fingers were tapped. After resuming the game, she was visibly in pain as the game was stopped for treatment twice in more in the remaining two minutes of the match.
Despite the injury, Dahiya opted to continue wrestling, but the incredible fight went in vain as the North Korean wrestler made the most of the situation and won the game 10-8 as Dahiya left the mat in tears.
