All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain. The 26-year-old sent an official letter on Thursday (July 11) to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), requesting the Board to relieve him of the position with immediate effect.
SLC in an official press release made the announcement public, also stating that Hasaranga had referred to his decision as one made ‘for the best interests of the team’.
“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga mentioned in his resignation letter.
Sri Lanka endured a disappointing T20 World Cup where they failed to get past the group stages of the tournament. Meanwhile, Hasaranga has also had his own share of disciplinary issues, be it with the ICC or SLC. The leg spinner has endured multiple suspensions by both Boards and earlier this week, got charged for violation of clothing and equipment in the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL).
